A right-click on desktop gives you quick access to personalization settings, desktop icon configuration, and display settings.
We have seen many Windows 10 users complaining that they are unable to perform a right-click on the desktop or nothing happens when right-clicked on the desktop.
When you are unable to right-click on the desktop, you can open the Control Panel or Settings app to access display settings and personalization settings, but access to desktop icons configuration is possible only with a right-click on the desktop.
Following are the two working solutions that you could use to enable right-click on Windows 10 desktop again. Note that if the context menu opening very slowly, please refer to our fix to slow desktop context menu in Windows 10 article.
Solution 1 of 2
Turn off the tablet mode
Windows 10 is designed to run on both computers and tablets. To help tablet users, there is a feature called tablet mode. Tablet mode, when turned on, shows the full Start menu and doesn’t show the desktop that we are all familiar with.
Can't Right Click On Taskbar
By default settings, Windows 10 automatically turns on the tablet mode only if it finds that you are running Windows 10 on a tablet device. But sometimes it might turn on the tablet mode even when you are on a regular laptop or desktop.
Here is how to turn off the tablet mode:
Step 1: Navigate to Settings app > System > Tablet mode.
Step 2: In When I sign in drop-down box, select Use desktop mode.
Sign out and sign in again to turn off the tablet mode. You can also restart to turn off the tablet mode. Star tamil tv serials. You should now be able to right-click on the desktop.
Solution 2 of 2
Check if right-click is disabled in Registry
One can disable right-click or context menu by making necessary changes to the Registry. But when the context menu is disabled, you won’t be able to right-click not just on the desktop but also in File Explorer or Windows Explorer.
Enabling the right-click menu or context menu is easy. Here is how to do just that.
Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by typing Regedit.exe in the Start/taskbar search and then pressing Enter key.
Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
Step 3: On the right-side, look for a value called NoViewContextMenu.
Step 4: Double-click on NoViewContextMenu value and change its value data to 0 (zero) to enable the right-click.
If NoViewContextMenu doesn’t exist, no need to do anything. The absence of NoViewContextMenu indicates that the right-click has not been disabled in Registry.
Close the Registry Editor. Either restart Windows Explorer or sign out and then sign in again to be able to right-click on the desktop. Rebooting your PC will do the same job.
How-To Geek Forums / Windows Vista(Solved) - Cannot right click on task bar(5 posts)
I am unable to right click on the Start Menu orb, the Quick Launch Bar, or the area where my applications are. I can left click to open/minimize/maximize just fine. I can also left click and right click any item in the lower right tray except for the clock. I can resize the separators as well. The only issue is no response to right clicking.
The issue started after I tried out a freeware program called WinPlusX. It is not a malicious program, as it was featured on addictivetips.com and Lifehacker.com and I have not seen any other users complain about it. This is the creator's page:
http://abhishekbest432.deviantart.com/art/WinPlusX-4-0-294790859
I have asked for help and described my issue in the comments, but I'm pretty sure the prick hid my comment to protect his program from criticism (there are two hidden comments at the bottom and I can't find mine). I also asked for help on the Lifehacker and addictivetips page but no dice. Here's what I put:
'I tried this software, but wasn't a fan because the regular right click menu would popup in front of the new menu this program provides. But ever since I stopped using it, I can't right click anywhere on my program bar!
I am now unable to right click on open windows to close/minimize/maximize them, cascade Windows, or quickly bring up the task manager in this fashion. I also can't right click on the start menu. I am however able to click on programs in the lower right system tray.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution to this issue? I've tried System Restore to no avail. I'm guessing there's a fix in the Registry or something?'
It won't right click in safe mode either, system restore doesn't help, and my last backup was about two weeks ago, so I'd like to find a more efficient fix. I could've sworn there was an option to disable right clicking on your task bar programs, but I have no idea how to get to it if it has been disabled. Any suggestions?
I'm using Windows Vista SP2, 32-bit.
I have tried recieving help from BleepingComputers as well where the users recommended I try the windows all in one repair tool and this HTG article: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-or-disable-right-click-context-menus-in-windows-explorer/. Neither of these methods worked for me. Any suggestions?
How about a System Restore to a date/time prior to this happening?
Try all of these solutions including the ShellExView Program in the link.

May have Start Up Item or Service running from (WinPlusX).
If so, we will delete it.
Post back.

I just experienced a similar problem on my wife's computer. In that case, when I right-clicked on any icon on the desktop it resulted in the Windows 7 spinning circle running in an endless loop and the only way out was to shut down and restart Explorer via task manager.
After much research, I learned that the problem was probably due to a bad 'context menu handler' - possibly from a non-microsoft, 3rd-party program.
By following the advice from others who had experienced this issue, I was able to resolve the issue and it may work for you:
Download a small utility called 'ShellExView' from Nirsoft:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
You don't need to install it - just extract the files to a folder.

Run the utility - it will take a few seconds to gather the information.
On the top of the list, click on the menu which says 'Type' and this will sort them all out.
Windows 10 Can T Click Taskbar
Read down the list, and look for all items marked 'Context Menu' which are NOT by Microsoft - they will probably be in pink.
Under the heading which says disabled, click one of the non-Microsoft items and change the disabled from 'No' to Yes'
Now try to see if this solves your right-click issue. If not, go back and re-enable the item you just disabled, and then try the next one.
Be sure you do this one at a time, because it will be the only way you will discover which item is causing the conflict.
In my case, we had recently updated the software for my wife's Western Digital external drive, and it had added all sorts of unwanted junk - one of which was a context menu handler which caused our problem. After disabling it using this utility, the problem was solved immediately.
Right Click Dublin
Keep your eyes out for any item on the list which may be connected to that program you tried out - because it may have left a few orphaned files behind.
Give it a try and let us know how you make out.
Hope this helps.
I'd like to thank everyone for the help, but I managed to fix the issue using a freeware called Secure Folders. Even though it is an encryption software, it had a couple other features, such as Fix Windows Issues. When I ran that, it recognized my System Tray Right Click Menu was disabled and fixed it for me.
Again, thanks for the help, I am copying down these posts to keep in a spare file for future reference (I have the whole Nirsoft Package with the NirLauncher in my Dropbox, but I've never really messed with it so yeah, good future learning experience lol).
